Establishment of oscillations in unstable resonators

An analysis is made of two recent papers on the application of unstable resonators to high-gain lasers. It is shown that many features of such lasers may be explained using the published treatments of the resonator theory. A criterion for attaining the minimum angular divergence is derived.
