A CASE OF RETROPERITONEAL LIPOSARCOMA ARISING IN GEROTA'S FASCIA WITH INTERESTING FINDINGS ON IMAGES

A case of retroperitoneal liposarcoma with interesting findings on imaging is reported.The patient was a 45-year-old female complaining of epigastralgia. Abdominal plain X-ray film showed a tumor with fat density. On CT images, the tumor was lobulated into two parts. One showed homogeneous contents of low density and the other, a honeycomb pattern. The tumor was extremely hyperechoic on US. The ascending and transverse colon was deviated in the caudal direction on barium enema. Angiography revealed that two adrenal arteries were feeding the tumor, but there was no hypervascularity. These findings established the diagnosis of liposarcoma in the retroperitoneum. Operation was performed. The tumor was covered with the retroperitoneum and expanded Gerota's fascia. It was lobulated into hard and homogeneous parts and soft and heterogeneous parts. The tumor, which was extirpated completely, was found to be well differentiated liposarcoma on histopathological examination.The variety of images was attributed to the amount of fibrous tissue in the tumor.
