Impact of DFIG-based wind farm on transient stability of single machine infinite bus system

With the increasing penetration of DFIG-based wind power into the power grid, its effects on synchronous generators in power system become extremely prominent. In the paper, the simplified model of a modified single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system with a DFIG-based wind farm integrated is well studied considering the transient characteristics of the DFIG-based wind farm in the different period of a fault, and the transient stability of the modified SMIB system is analyzed theoretically based on equal-area criterion (EAC) and assessed quantificationlly by using the index of critical clearing time (CCT). The analysis indicates that the performance of synchronous generator can be either improved or deteriorated when DFIG-based wind power are integrated into the system and the stability will decrease as the capacity increases. The effectiveness of the analysis is verified by simulation.
