Information Technology Resources, the Organizational Capability of Lean-Agile Manufacturing, and Business Performance

Thisarticledrewontheresource-basedviewofthefirmandassessedhowmanufacturingfirms— particularlyindevelopingcountries—canleveragetheirITresourcesinsupportofleanmanufacturing and agilemanufacturing.Thedata collectionwas conductedvia a surveyof Iranian automobile manufacturersthatsupplyinternationalautomobilemakers.TheresultshowedthatITresourcesare crucialtothedevelopmentofleanmanufacturingandagilemanufacturing.ThevalueofITistruly transformedtoperformanceimprovementwhenITresourcesareeffectivelyleveragedinsupport of thesemanufacturing systems.Leanandagilemanufacturingare twomanufacturing strategies that canco-exist inone systemandagilemanufacturingmay flourishunder leanmanufacturing circumstances.Complementaritiesexistamongdifferentpracticesofleanmanufacturingaswellas differentdimensionsofagilemanufacturing.Theauthors’findingsoffertheoreticalinsightsregarding thevaluesofIT-enabledleanmanufacturingandagilemanufacturingatoperationandstrategiclevels.
