Experimental investigation and finite element modelling in gravity die casting

Abstract A combined experimental model for a gravity die casting is presented. The experiments were shown to yield consistent results and confirmed earlier studies, which showed that interfacial heat transfer depends on the casting solidification state and that only its maximum value is affected by die coat thickness. The numerical model was found to capture the thermal transients when interface effects were included and when the removal of cores was accounted for in the analysis. To reflect this process, an integrated cyclic analysis is demonstrated capturing the thermal behaviour during fill, solidification and die open stages in the casting cycle.
