New methods of driving plasma current in fusion devices

New methods of driving current in resistive plasmas are proposed. Ion beams of high and low energy arc injected in a plasma. Plasma electrons and ions receive momenta through Coulomb interaction from the respective beams. The resultant forces compensate the loss of relative momenta between electrons and ions due to plasma resistivity. When used in a toroidal plasma device, the methods eliminate the necessity of inductive electric fields, thus making it possible for the device to operate in a steady state. The required power for the methods may be made much smaller than the Rision output power.
