PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT: PROCEEDINGS OF NATIONAL WORKSHOPS. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

The responsibilities of pavement management activities are noted and the objectives of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) program to promote good pavement management are noted. The goal of this program is to improve the quality and performance and minimize the cost of the highway pavement. The program will encourage dissemination of pavement performance and cost experience among and within the highway agencies, and encourage the implementation of programs that will (a) relate pavement performance to design, construction and maintenance practices; (b) evaluate alternative designs for both new pavements and pavement rehabilitation; (c) evaluating and predicting the condition of pavements (d) predicting funding levels and the corresponding levels of service; and (e) encouraging coordination between the functional elements of the highway agency which have pavement management related responsibilities. To accomplish these goals, the FHWA has initiated several activities. FHWA will strengthen its own pavement management program, help advance the state of the art, and assist states in identifying needs, providing research, and developing training programs. FHWA will also work with the AASHTO Joint Task Force on Pavements to distribute the best available guidance.
