they represent a sample &dquo;fairly typical of handicapped people in general&dquo;; interviews were used to elicit their views on their experiences of social interaction, their knowledge about the causes and implications of their handicaps, about possible marriage and family life and employment, besides considering their competence in basic skills and self-care. Parents were questioned too, and a small group of nonhandicapped adolescents were surveyed as a control.
