The Flow of Information in Information Retrieval: Towards a General Framework for the Modelling of Information Retrieval

It has been argued that current Information Retrieval (IR) models offer only simplistic and specific representations of information. There is, therefore, a need for the development of a new formalism able to model IR systems in a more expressive manner, hence capturing information as it appears in an IR system, and also in any of its inherent forms. It has been suggested that such formalisms can be both appropriately and powerfully defined within a logic. Indeed, in the Oxford English Dictionary, logic is defined as:
