The economic advantages of substituting ultrasonic for radiographic techniques

Abstract The author argues that the replacement of radiography by ultrasonics does save cost and time with no loss of effectiveness. These savings, however, depend on thorough ndt techniques and proper support by a management conversant with the capabilities of ultrasonics. The author illustrates his argument with radiographic and ultrasonic examinations of a valve casting and concludes that the results have a general validity. From the general argument and this example he derives the conditions under which ultrasonics can safely replace radiography.
