A Novel Scalable Multistage DWDM PON Architecture Using Cascaded Optical Interleavers With Increasing Periodicities Controlled in Central Offices

A new multistage scheme for dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (DWDM PON) is proposed. This scheme is realized by cascading optical interleavers with increasing periodicities. Downstream transmission of a DWDM comb consisting of four 10 Gb/s channels is demonstrated in the proposed multistage network. We also show a scheme to provide upstream transmission. Experimental results show that this technique has the potential to support many groups of customers located at various distances from the central office.
