Study of Media Functions on Vector Processing Engines for Network Processing Applications

Motorola’s AltivecTM technology provides a new, SIMD vector extension to the PowerPCTM architecture. Altivec technology provides embedded and computing system designers with a new ”one part-one code base” approach to product design. Intel’s Streaming SIMD Extension 2 (SSE2) technology is designed to accelerate performance of applications involving floating-point based code and algorithms that operate on blocks of data. These features not only enhance the performance dramatically but are also valid for a wide range of applications, which include multimedia rich technologies like audio and video compression, 2D image processing, 3D graphics, speech and handwriting recognition, media mining, and narrow/broadband signal processing for communication.
