Thorney Island: Its geography and meteorology

Abstract A general description of the Thorney Island site is given together with a summary of its prevailing weather conditions. The specific aspects of surface roughness measurement and atmospheric stability classification are given detailed attention. As an illustration of the use of the environmental sensor data, four trials are studied covering a range of conditions from highly unstable through neutral to stable atmospheres. The difficulties in deriving an “unanimous” verdict on atmospheric stability class are addressed.
