STRUCTURAL DAMPING IN DESIGN ANALYSIS OF FLEXIBLE RISERS

The paper discusses damping in nonbonded pipes based on experimental results and application in design analysis. The main conclusions from the study are that structural damping in flexible pipes is high in bending and can influence dynamic response significantly. The damping level is in general different for the unlike modes of deformations. The experiments are performed on a 4" internal diameter, 8m long nonbonded pipe pressurised temperature effects are neglected. Damping measures are obtained for both tension, torsion and bending deformations. Refined damping models are developed and implemented in a computer program. The significance of applying different damping models and levels on the design of a riser system is shown through numerical simulations of extreme situations.
