Analysis of the influence of non-linear loads on the measurement and billing of electrical energy compared with the CPT

This article analyzes the impact of electronic loads, particularly CRT, LCD and LED televisions, regarding the measurements of reactive power in energy meters of Brazilian Electric Power companies and consequently the influence of those measurements in the reactive surplus Billing (Reactive Energy Excess and Demand Energy Excess). Later, the values obtained from the energy meter are compared to the CPT power components. For the reactive surplus calculation, it is considered not only the reactive power, but also the distortion in the system. It is concluded that the harmonic distortion causes significant interference in measurements of reactive power in energy meters, and that the calculation of reactive power surplus through power factor allows certain inconsistencies in the billing.
