Method for compressing and decompressing display data

The invention relates to a method for compressing and decompressing display data. The method includes steps of computing row addresses of updated data in an uncompressed video memory by the aid of a CPU (central processing unit) after the image data in the uncompressed video memory are updated, extracting and compressing corresponding rows of data in the uncompressed video memory, and storing the rows of data into storage addresses in a compressed video memory; stopping the CPU from compressing the updated data in an original video memory when the data of the corresponding video memory are updated at high speeds, configuring registers of a display controller, reading the data in the uncompressed video memory from a next frame by the aid of the display controller, and the like. The storage addresses in the compressed video memory correspond to the rows. The method has the advantages that the data of the corresponding video memory can be compressed and decompressed by the aid of the method, accordingly, bus bandwidth occupation in high-resolution display procedures can be reduced, and the performance of systems can be improved.
