Mathematical programming and resource management

This paper reviews important aspects of the current state of mathematical programming ― the use of optimisation techniques to model and solve constrained optimisation problems. The approach is non-technical, but seeks to give an understanding of the mathematical programming paradigm and its scope, computational issues, and important system features enabling the use and understanding of mathematical models. Within the limits of reported results, examples are given of the approach to large-scale mathematical programming applications in resource management and some conclusions are drawn about the requirements to generate successful applications
