Study on the effect of STATCOM on transient voltage stability of a practical power grid

This paper focuses on the 50M Var static compensator (STATCOM) used for voltage stability support as a dynamic reactive power source, which was installed in Shanghai power grid recently. Detail models of STATCOM and shunt capacitor are presented, and time-domain simulation method is employed to assess the effects on Shanghai power grid by using NETOMAC program. With the use of NETOMAC, large disturbance, such as three phase short circuit, in Shanghai power grid near the installation placement is simulated. Test results show that STATCOM plays a notable role in voltage stability support for power system. (4 pages)
