Composition adjustments in cadmium fluorochloride glasses

Systematic experiments were implemented for stabilizing a cadmium fluorochloride glass containing Na and Ba. Glass stability was evaluated using Hruby's factor, Hr, which did not change significantly after incorporation of SrF2 or InF3, but rose from 0.47 to 0.85 by adjusting BaF2/NaF and CdF2/CdCl2 ratios. Further substitution of CdCl2 by KF led to a still more stable glass with Hr = 2.31 (composition in mol%: 33CdCl2, 17CdF2, 34NaF, 13BaF2, 3KF). Thermal and optical characteristics are given.
