Burst detection and location in pipe networks using a continuous monitoring technique

This paper presents a continuous monitoring approach for detecting and locating bursts in pipe networks using pressure transient theory. Continuous pressure measurements at two locations are analysed. The algorithm is based on the difference between the arrival times of the burst-induced pressure wave at each measurement point and on the measured wave magnitude. The arrival times are determined automatically using the cumulative sum (CUSUM) change detection algorithm, allowing implementation in real time. A method of determining optimal measurement locations is also presented. Numerical simulations are used for validation. The results show that the proposed technique has potential as a tool for the effective detection and location of bursts in real pipe networks.
