Several methods for contour detection of the left ventricle (LV) were developed in images obtained by using equilibrium radionuclide angiography (ERNA) to find wall motion abnormalities or to measure the volume of the LV. Such measurement, based on the number of counts inside the LV, allows us to calculate the ejection fraction. In this contribution we introduce an alternative approach to locate the boundary of the LV in the left anterior oblique (LAO) view, based on mathematical morphology operations. We have developed a completely automatic method, that restores previously the image with a Wiener filter ,after that, it finds the region where the left ventricle is contained and finally it segments the left ventricle contour and a zone of background. The method is applied to 25 studies and the results of the volumes are compared with those obtained from the contours outlined by three experienced operators. The method is also applied to determine volumes of gammagraphic images of a phantom. Good correlation between the results and the real volumes are obtained.
