Sustainable Utility Placement for University Campuses

University campuses, as owners and operators of their utility infrastructure, have generally taken a longer-term view of how utility infrastructure assets are placed below ground and therefore have a much greater appreciation for how such novel placement methods as Multi-Utility Tunnels (MUTs), a tunnel that houses more than one utility type, perform in the longer term (>50 yrs). This paper provides details of a 3 km MUT network built in the late 1950s and early 1960s that is currently undergoing considerable repair, refurbishment, modification and expansion to meet the demands of a 21 st Century university campus. The paper discusses the sustainable advantages of adopting an MUT within a university campus and provides lessons learned.
