Safety Technology Adoption Patterns in the U.S. Motor Carrier Industry

This article presents the results of a survey of over 400 U.S. motor carriers regarding the safety technology practices that they have adopted. After describing the survey methodology, the article examines the adoption rates of the five primary safety technologies that were identified in the survey. These include: driver communication, vehicle communication, driver performance, vehicle performance, and vehicle maintenance. Finally, the article studies the links between technology adoption and firm characteristics, including size, geographic scope, commodity carried, and load type.
