Collaborative Bicycle Sensing for Air Pollution on Roadway

In this paper, we present a collaborative bicycle sensing for monitoring urban air quality. A Sensing Box is developed with affordable portable sensors, a GPS receiver, and a Bluetooth, and these Sensing box are mounted in a public bicycle sharing system to monitor air pollutants (gasoline exhaust gas pand articulate matters) on roadways, which forms a mobile large scale monitoring network. When cyclists return public bicycle to a bicycle station, the data collected from roadways are uploaded to the bicycle station via Bluetooth. These data are further tansmitted into a data center through public bike sharing infrastructure. The Sensing Box is capble of transmitting data directly into the data center through built-in GPRS module. The air quality of the entire city is presented on a website and is available to everyone.
