Millimeter-wave circularly-polarized traveling-wave substrate integrated waveguide antennas

Circularly-polarized traveling-wave antennas at 60GHz using substrate integrated circuits (SICs) technology are presented and their performances are studied and demonstrated. By using the SICs technology, compact planar integrated waveguide antennas are designed with low-loss feeding structure and good design accuracy. Elementary antenna building block composed of two inclined slots etched on the waveguide surface is characterized by full-wave simulations. This characterization is used for the design and synthesis of entire antenna structure with different power aperture distributions, namely, uniform, Tchebychev and Taylor. Simulation results show that the proposed antennas exhibit good performances in terms of impedance matching, gain (more than 16dB), circular polarization and side lobe level (up to −27dB). Such antennas have potential applications in the design of fully integrated transceivers for millimeter-wave radio and radar systems.
