Development of Molb Type Sofc

This paper summarizes the latest development of MOLB (Mono-block Layer Built) type SOFC and modules. Authors have jointly developed and evaluated MOLB type SOFC since 1990. Based on the historical joint research and development, especially based on the several-10 kW class module operations in 2000, the NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) 10 kW class module project started in 2001 for four years. In order to establish the structure of the module as a basic unit of large-scale SOFC power generation system, 10 kW class thermally self-supporting module has been developed using MOLB type SOFCs. The module consists of SOFC furnace, startup gas burner, air recuperator and condenser. Startup and shutdown procedures are fully automated by a digital control system, which reflects the dynamic simulation results. The system was completed at the end of fiscal year 2003 after substantial BOP adjustments and confirmation tests. By the end of fiscal year 2004, a long-term operation test is planned to verify the stability of the MOLB stacks and modules. Also, the development of 200 kW class co-generation system has been started in 2004 for a four yearn project; NEDO supports apart of the study.
