The Combined Influence of Sharpness and Graininess on the Quality of Colour Prints

AbstractThis paper describe the results of a study of the influence of covariations in sharpness and graininess on the quality of small (90 mm x 125 mm) colour prints. Sixty observers, who scaled quality, sharpness and graininess, evaluated 210 prints of 5 scenes. The results show that when all other factors a!fecting print quality are constant and near optimum, harpness and graininess combine in a non-linear, non-Euclidean way to influence print quality. An empirical equation is given for these perceptual relationships.
