Airflow Resistance of Conscious Boars

ABSTRACT AIRWAY resistance can be an important parameter to characterize pulmonary function. It is a measure of the frictional resistance to airflow through the conducting airways from trachea to the terminal bronchioles. Measurements of airway resistance could be used to help identify and quantify respiratory abnormality, and provide a reference whereby response to respiratory therapy or progression of disease can be assessed. However, in marked contrast to the amount of airway resistance data available on human subjects, livestock airway resistance information in the literature has, unfortunately, been scarce (Table 1). The need exists for sufficient information to establish normal values of livestock airway resistance to provide physiologists as well as veterinarians with a basic reference.
