INTEGRATING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTO A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL OPERATIONAL TELEMETRY SYSTEM

ABSTRACT This paper briefly describes the development, 1974 to 1984, of a control system for water supply operations, with the unique flexibility of a V.H.F. radio alarm interface. The extension of control from a single function activity (water supply) to a multi-functional role together with current programmes of research and development into new techniques in the following areas:- a. On-line water quality monitoring in the distribution network; b. zone pressure control utilizing micro based intelligent telemetry outstations; c. remote supervision and monitoring of a medium size sewage disposal works using computer emulation techniques. The preliminary results for all of the above areas have indicated that the techniques under evaluation are viable from an engineering point of view. The adjusting of original designs to a cost effective package is currently under consideration.
