Application of just-in-time principles to the chemical process industry: a case study

Summary form only given. The chemical industry, because of its inherent process oriented nature, poses restrictions on the application of certain JIT concepts. This study reinforces the belief that, many JIT concepts can successfully be applied to the process industry. Examining the case of a specialty additives plant of a Fortune 500 Company, observations were made to identify the ways and means of applying JIT in the production area and other operations of the plant. The conclusions of this study suggest several actions for implementation of JIT in the chemical process industry plant that was studied. In conclusion, it is certainly practical to adopt JIT in the chemical process industry even if it is in a modified version and not in its complete form. However, any such implementation requires a systematic approach. Moreover, input from each employee should be sought while taking into account the specific needs of the sectors of operation.
