Multilingual MenUSE - A Japanese front-end for searching English Language databases and vice versa

The exchange of information between Japan and the rest of the world has been hampered because of the language barrier and the small number of Japanese databases translated into English and other languages. Multilingual MenUSE (Menu-based User Search Engine), a generic interface and intermediary system for end-user searching and browsing of bibliographic databases, enables Japanese users to search nonJapanese databases, specifying their search requirements in their own language. Similarly MenUSE can provide an English Language front-end to a Japanese Language database. The principle of automatic search statement generation, following concept and term selection during the navigation of an enhanced thesaurus, makes MenUSE very appropriate for multilingual searching and browsing of bibliographic databases. This paper describes the construction of a demonstration version of MenUSE to search the INSPEC Computer and Control database in both Japanese and English using HyperCard 2.0 on an Apple Macintosh. There are also significant advantages in using the MenUSE interface to search Japanese databases in Japanese given the considerable keyboarding effort required to specify queries in Japanese.
