Dr. Dokiya made contributions to development of solid oxide fuel cell technology in a variety of aspects. The most important contribution is in the materials development which is closely related with materials processing for a given stack design. He and his colleagues developed the essential points in materials sciences for fabricating planar stacks by wet sintering method. They also made large contributions to characterization of oxide interconnect, electrolyte, electrode and sealing materials. Some attempts were also made on the development of direct carbon fuel cells, direct methane fuel cells as well as on train cells. Later, attempts were made on SOFC reformers. He was a good organizer of the SOFC community; the SOFC society of Japan has been well organized to promote R&D activities on SOFC related technology among the private sector, national laboratories and universities. This provides a basis of Japanese commitment to the international activities. He also encouraged young researchers to tackle challenges in technological fields.
