OPTIMAL CONTROL OF DYNAMIC ROUTE INFORMATION PANELS

Abstract This paper discusses the problem of guiding traffic through a network using either dynamic route guidance or information. Main results are derivation and interpretation of the structure of the optimal control law, using mathematical control theory, resulting in improved performance with respect to the objective function when guidance instead of information provision is applied. Subsequently, the problem is formulated as a nonlinear mathematical programming problem with a reduced dimension decision-vector. Finally, this paper discusses a cross-comparison of the different control schemes in an example network.
