A fault location method in distribution network with use of wavelet-based traveling-wave

The distribution of networks is a tree structure, and it often has many branches. It is very difficult to locate accurately a single-phase to ground fault. In this paper, a method for fault location is proposed. The method is based on multi-terminal traveling wave, and every transformer is equipped with the device which can identify traveling wave. When a fault occurs, the time that the first head of traveling wave arrives at every transformer is sent to the fault management center, where the three shortest times are chosen to identify the region of fault. Then, the wrong fault location is excluded. Finally, the method is simulated by the ATP software, and the simulation result shows that the fault can be located accurately and quickly.
