Chapter 9 Water Quality for Subsurface Injection

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on setting standards for water quality, means by which standards may be met, and the problems arising during the handling of water. The water must have a quality that enables injection of the water into the subsurface formation at the desired injection rate without prohibitive pressures. In addition, water must not cause more corrosion than can be economically tolerated during the time necessary to recover the oil. The chapter discusses water quality control that is concerned mainly with injection suitability and corrosion control. Detailed specifications are important to maintain a given water quality necessary for the completion of a specific project. In setting water quality specifications, one must be careful not to lose sight of the primary purpose of the water quality control, because unnecessarily high standards result in extra cost without compensating return.
