Portable telephones for cellular systems

A portable radiotelephone suitable for operation in 800 MHz cellular systems and compatible with the developmental systems proposed by Bell Laboratories and Motorola has been developed. The size, weight and power drain goals in critical transceiver portions were achieved by the use of custom integrated circuits packaged in hybrid modules. The partitioning of the microprocessor based logic unit into custom CMOS chips and test results for the data acquisition system are presented. Design and human engineering factors are discussed.
