Industrial energy use

Abstract This chapter presents different key performance indicators (KPIs) to be able to benchmark energy use and the text raises some advantages and disadvantages by using KPIs. Moreover, different levels of energy KPIs are presented. The presentation about energy KPIs is followed by an introduction to the unit process concept. Unit processes are general to all industries and enable comparisons between industries in terms of energy efficiency. Unit processes are divided into production processes and support processes and all these processes are listed in the chapter. Thereafter the 11 production processes, for example, coating, molding, and melting, are presented. The 10 support processes, for example, pumping, ventilation, and lighting, are only summarized in this chapter but are thoroughly presented in Chapters 8–11. The chapter includes a section about energy and digitalization, and the use of digitalization in industries, for example, benchmarking.
