Analytical Studies on Load Carrying Capacities of Riveted Railway Bridges Subjected to Collision Damages

This paper describes how collision accidents to an aged railway bridge girder obstructing train services occasionally do occur. At some intersections where the road runs under the railway bridge, accidents occur where vehicles exceeding the overhead clearance height collide with the bridge protective frames or over-bridges. This paper presents investigations of the load carrying capacity of steel I-section riveted girders subjected to the deformation simulated as collision damage and focuses attention on collision damage patterns and deformation levels through quasi-static finite element method analysis.
