A New Matching Criterion and Block Matching Algorithm

Motion estimation and motion compensation are included as major technologies into the existing video coding standards,in which key problems are focused on the veracity for block matching. So it is necessary to find a more reasonable block-matching criterion. As SAD is selected as the traditional block-matching criterion,it can not represent the actual differences between two blocks because of the features of them and sometimes as if two blocks had a larger value of SAD,and they would be encoded with more similar bits. This paper proposes a new matching criterion based on SAD,which improves the precision and accuracy for matching, and presents the block matching algorithm based on the proposed criterion.Experimental results based on the H.264/AVC reference software of JM10.1 show that the proposed block-matching criterion and the corresponding algorithm can get a better video compression performance and improve the coding efficiency while maintaining the negligible increase of coding complexity.
