Leaping To Conclusions: Connectionism, Consciousness, and the Computational Mind

These are strange times for consciousness. Considered subjectively, and as the reader may confirm for herself, we are as thoroughly aware of our inner and outer world as ever. The light of consciousness falls on these words and their meanings, leaps nimbly to the noises in the background, attends to a slight pang of thirst and frames a private plan to allay it, then settles back once more, with an inner sigh, to the unfolding text of this paper. It is for us as it was for Descartes, and presumably as it is, was, and will continue to be for all humanity.
