Visual and haptic angle perception in the matching task.

Forty subjects reproduced angles of 30-150 deg from a series of comparison angles presented in ascending and descending orders. Magnitude of error was significantly lower for the visual-visual group than for the haptic-haptic, visualhaptic, and haptic-visual groups. The results suggest that haptic percepts of angle are smaller in magnitude than those for vision and that performance differences between modalities reflect both the nature of form discrimination and the nature of the matching task itself.
