How iconic gestures and speech interact in the representation of meaning: Are both aspects really integral to the process?

Les mouvements involontaires des mains qui accompagnent le langage ont ete etudies et classes dans differentes categories par rapport a leur fonction. L'A. s'interesse ici au role communicationnel d'un type particulier de geste, le geste iconique qui a une signification reliee au contenu semantique de la parole. La theorie de McNeill concernant ce type de geste iconique lui confere une place importante dans le processus de signification, affirmant que sans le geste la communication perd de l'information. L'A. critique certains points de la theorie de McNeill et en propose une evaluation experimentale.
