Options for sustainable agricultural systems and policy instruments to reach them

Options for sustainable agricultural systems can be evaluated at regional level making use of scenario analysis. Two different approaches for the design and appraisal of regional development scenarios are presented: (a) comprehensive resource based planning, using multiple goal linear programming techniques, and (b) supply response analysis using econometric techniques and continuous homogeneous production function. Both modelling approaches, appropriately modified, are combined into an integrated framework for interactive evaluation of trade-offs between agro-ecological goals at regional level and the attainable socio-economic options at farm household level.
