Regulatory Issues for Bioaerosols

In broad terms, biotechnology is the harnessing of biological processes for the production of commercially useful substances. The basic concepts have been practiced for thousands of years, yielding many products used in commerce today. But the applications of biotechnology based on genetic engineering support a new industry with tremendous potential to develop even more useful products. An improved capability to address potential concerns posed by these products is needed. Commercial biotechnology applications can be divided into two loosely defined categories: (1) contained product manufacturing processes and (2) uncontained and semicontained processes.
