An automatic crossover point selection technique for image enhancement using fuzzy sets

Abstract In fuzzy image enhancement model originated by De and Chatterji, a set of fuzzifiers and contrast intensification operators are adopted for image contrast enhancement, and several parameters of the transfer function must be adjusted interactively to improve the enhanced image quality. In this paper, we propose a simple modification of this model by automatic crossover point selection. An optimal crossover point is selected by the criterion function, namely, so as to maximize the fuzziness of gray level. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is illustrated using some experimental images with 256 gray levels, and the results are compared with the histogram equalization technique using the index of fuzziness and entropy.
