Future bus structure for 32-bit personal computers

Abstract Based on the all-important feature of compatibility to the present industry-standard for personal computers, the difficult decision faced by manufacturers entering the 32-bit processor arena is highlighted. Modern PC bus requirements are analyzed and available standard bus structures are illustrated. The reality of the personal computer world is then discussed showing the solution Compaq Computer Corp. chose for its 80386 model. New hopes and dangers connected with IBM's announcement of its PS/2 family with its new bus architecture are briefly described.
