Several researchers from Germany and England have collected data on real accidents involving pedestrians and vehicles (Stuertz and Suren (1976), Hill (1994) Dettinger (1996)). The data sets have been analysed by Evans and Smith (1999). This paper has presented an outline of the analysis and a discussion of the results and their implications for accident investigators. Such an analysis of real accidents provides reliable equations for accident investigators to use. The method provides both an equation for the most likely impact speed of the vehhicle and also bounds on this speed. That is, it provides both the probable impact speed of the vehicle and an indication of the accuracy of this speed. (A)
