Fabrication and experiment of piezoelectric pump imitating peristalsis

This study proposes a piezoelectric pump without a check valve to simulate the peristaltic motion of the stomach as a traveling wave. The traveling wave is formed by the vibration of the piezoelectric element and affected by interval, phase, etc. Therefore, the design parameters are determined using these conditions, and a multiphysical analysis through COMSOL Multiphysics is conducted to verify the feasibility. The pump is modeled according to the traveling wave applying method according to the phase. The flow rates are compared according to each model. The optimum conditions are selected and applied to the modeling of the experiment. Fluid analysis is then conducted. The experimental model is fabricated based on the analysis result. A pump with 16-ceramic connections is used in the experiment. A casing is made with a three-dimensional printer for the same situation as the boundary conditions. The experiments are performed for 20 min, and the possibility of this pump is verified through one- and two-way flow experiments.
