Finite Element Method in Railway Track Modelling

Finite element method has been used to create a computerised track model in order to simplify new developments in track analysis and to investigate limitations and requirements in track modelling. Minimum required depth of subgrade layers in the finite element models, effects of considered tensile stress in ballast on results of analysis, accuracy of current practices in analysis of track, natural frequencies of track system for different conditions in track components, effects of non-linear properties of soil parts, and effects of non-homogeneous support on results of analysis have been investigated. This investigation is conducted by using the finite element model with different characteristics of track components as well as different analysis procedures.
