Recently Thomas Pettigrew, a noted authority on Negro-white relations, lamented the lack of knowledge about the Negro personality in spite of innumerable studies conducted in this area. Noting the methodological inadequacies and limitations, as well as the narrow atheoretical approach of many studies, he advocated the development of a social psychological theory which takes into account both personality dynamics and their social origins.1
